Great Bend Police arrested two individuals Sunday afternoon after a vehicle search led to the discovery of suspected narcotics, weapons and cash.

According to the GBPD, officers stopped a black 2020 Chevy Malibu for speeding in the 600 block of Main shortly after 5:30 p.m. Officers made contact with the driver, 28-year-old Essence Akins, and a passenger, 26-year-old Joshua Williams. Officers detected the odor of marijuana coming from the car. The GBPD canine handler was contacted and requested the Police Service Dog Menta. Menta conducted a free air sniff around the exterior of the vehicle and indicated the odor of suspected narcotics.

Officers then conducted a search of the Malibu and located a digital scale, two pill bottles containing unknown pills, a small plastic bag, one .45 caliber bullet and $363 in cash, along with suspected methamphetamine and a Ruger .45 caliber handgun and a loaded magazine.  All items were collected and booked into evidence at the GBPD.

Both Akins and Williams were booked into custody at the Barton County Detention Center in lieu of $100,000 bond. If anyone has any information regarding this incident or any other investigation, contact the GBPD at 620-793-4120 or Great Bend Crime Stoppers at 620-792-1300.
