The Great Bend Bat Cats nearly pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in their 10-year history in a lightning-delayed baseball game Monday night.

Alas, the last-place Kingman Islanders proved anything is possible with a hard-fought 9-8 victory over the Bat Cats, who started the game in first place in the Jayhawk Collegiate summer league.

The Islanders (1-6) built a 6-0 lead when the Bat Cats (4-1, 3-1 Jayhawk) staged an incredible rally that came up one run shy.

The Bat Cats Drew within 9-8 when Chase Kessler and Peanut Brazzle scored on a wild eighth-inning groundball off Brazzle's bat. Kingman reliever Mason Munz earned a save in the ninth inning.

Kingman third baseman Josiah Schmidt and catcher Jesus Vanez committed errors on Brazzle's 'Bad News Bears' style groundball that saw T.J. Shaw get thrown out at third base. Jaxon Bunkers popped out to strand the tying runner Andrugh Yee.

Chase Kessler's fourth-inning single scored Carter Graham and Chase Chapman for a 6-2 score.

In a 2-run fifth inning, Bunkers scored on Kirby Orth's triple. Orth scored on Decarlo Delancy's fly ball for a 6-4 score.

In a 4-run eighth inning, T.J. Shaw doubled home Delancy and Chapman prior to Brazzle's groundball.

Kingman's Schmidt drove home four runs with three hits. Jack Scheiner drove in two runs. Karston Wall doubled home Mak Lerma and Schmidt singled home Wall for Kingman's decisive eighth-inning runs.
