MACKSVILLE GIRLS 40, LARNED 36

ST. JOHN – Macksville's Mayce Russell converted four free throws as the Mustangs escaped Larned's upset bid 40-36 in Monday's Mid-Winter Basketball Classic.

The lead changed hands four times in the fourth quarter after Karley Lemuz gave Larned its first lead 32-31. Macksville's Laney Butler and Kambry Adams gave the Mustangs the lead while Lemuz gave the Indians the edge twice.

Adams scored 15 inside points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Joselin Garcia scored 12 points. Macksville (7-4)  converted 16 of61 field goals and 6 of 12 free throws.

Larned's Akielah Collins scored 15 points, Elizabeth Hererra seven and Lemuz six. The Indians (1-9) were 13 of 44 from the field for 29%. Larned converted 8 of 27 free throws, essentially sealing their loss.

“Our inability to hit free throws really hurt us," said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. "We made a few late, but it was a miserable night shooting free throws. Our inexperience really hurt us. We had costly turnovers that kept us from winning the game. I'm really proud of the effort, but we just missed too many shots..

Larned shifted defenses in the second half, employing a 1-3-1 zone to narrowed the gap.
