Panther girls earn state cross country medals

LAWRENCE — Great Bend freshman Decorah Schroeter (19:24.19) earned the 14th-place medal at the 5A girls state cross country meet at Rim Rock.

The Panthers (187) placed sixth behind champion Wichita Kapaun Mt. Carmel (58) and Wichita Carroll (79).

The Panthers also counted 23rd-place Sydney Stein, 19:40.55; 27th-place Bella Long, 19:53.25; 65th-place Samantha Negaard, 21:29.01; and 89th-place MaKenzie Gwin, 22:54.26.

"Congrats on the girls on their sixth-place finish," said Great Bend cross country coach Lyles Lashley. "All the girls return next year."

Salina Central's Kaylie Shultz (17:26.3) won the girls championship.

Panther Tavon Stroup (16:29.88) placed 22nd with a career best time at Rim Rock after placing 25th and 50th at state. The Panthers also counted 42nd-place Brogan Lashley, 17:10.85; 70th-place Isaac Aldana, 18:00.99; 86th-place Noah Kaiser, 18:33.12; and 87th-place Parker Coleman, 18:33.8.

The Panthers (258) placed 11th behind team champion Wichita Kapaun Mt. Carmel (42-24) and Blue Valley Southwest (42-38).

"The boys' goal was to beat one team, and they did that," Lashley said.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel's Daniel Enriguez (15:12.42) won the boys race.

3A LAWRENCE — Hoisington's Brody Rossman (16:51.53) earned a top 20 medal with a 14th-place finish for the second consecutive year.

2A WAMEGO — Ellinwood sophomore Eleanor Joiner placed fourth (19:49.69) at the 2A state cross country meet at Wamego Country Club. Joiner finished 15th last year.

The Ellinwood girls (191) and Ellinwood boys (223) earned ninth place.

Also counting for the Ellinwood girls were 33rd-place Jenna Borror, 21:31.57; 68th-place Ali Gonzalez, 23:00.95; 81st-place Madison Dombroski, 23:39.4; and  95th-place Clarisse Masset, 25:30.14.

Smith Center's Madison Howland (19:16.77) was girls medalist.

Elinwood's Ryan Pohlman (17:26.53) placed 19th to lead the Eagles. Also counting were 68th-place Shae Hoskins, 19:21.09; 92nd-place Joe Brauer, 20:44.56; 94th-place Josh Zook, 20:57.55; 69th-place Ethan Robl, 19:27.52.

Boys medalist Jacob Lindstrom (16:26.21) placed the team champion Hutchinson Trinity.

1A WAMEGO — Central Plains Oiler Taylin Davis (20:36.65) earned fifth-medalist honors in her first state meet. Ellis Railroader medalist Avery Boydston (18:53.45) was followed by her sister Taryn Boydston (18:54.2).

Stafford Trojan Joel Valadez (16:44.1) earned third medalist honors at the 1A state cross country meet at Wamego Country Club. Goessel's Eli Gaeddert (16:02.8) was the boys medalist.

St. John's Aaden Gonzalez (17:45.3) placed 21st to pace the Tigers to ninth place. 

Also counting for the Tigers were 26th-place Liam Knight, 18:00.1; 69th-place Jayce Feril, 19:28.2; 70th-place Garrett Dunn, 19:28.6 and 82nd-place Jacob Rotert, 20:33.6.
