Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library, and happy holidays! Our first big December holiday is just around the corner with Hanukkah starting on Dec. 14. Fun fact: in the year 3031, there will be no Hanukkah because of the way the Hebrew calendar and Gregorian calendars align; the holiday will begin on January 1, 3032. As a trade-off there will be two in 3032, so mark your calendars!
Today, Dec. 11, after Genealogy Corner at 11 a.m., join us for Adult Craft Night at 6 p.m. This month we are making Coffee Filter Angels. Take an everyday object and turn it into a beautiful decoration for your home or a thoughtful homemade gift.
Friday at 3:45 p.m., teens grades 6-12 can join us for Casual Game Friday with Hades, a roguelike action role-playing game where you play as Zagreus, the son of Hades. “As the immortal Prince of the Underworld, you’ll wield the powers and mythic weapons of Olympus to break free from the clutches of the god of the dead himself, while growing stronger and unraveling more of the story with each unique escape attempt.” (Steam)
Next Monday, Dec. 15, we will be closing at 5 p.m. to get ready for our special Holiday Story Time: Adventures in Narnia. Step through the wardrobe into C.S. Lewis’ land of Narnia and join the quest to find Aslan. Meet Father Christmas and listen to him read the story, “The Night before Christmas.” Overcome challenges as you search for Aslan and taste some treats of Narnia. Fashion yourself a crown and get your picture taken sitting on a throne at Cair Paravel. The festivities start at 6:30 p.m.
Next week, bring your smart device-related questions to Tech Tuesday at 11 a.m. That evening at 7 p.m., we invite you to join us for our December Book Club meeting. We will be discussing “A Most Agreeable Murder” by Julia Seales. The story follows a feisty, passionate Beatrice Steele, who struggles to be a true lady in accordance with the strict code of conduct of Swampshire, her small English township, and her true crime obsession certainly isn’t helping her case. Grab your copy at the front desk and join in on the discussion.
Next Thursday, Dec. 18, at 5:30 p.m., it’s time for our next Teen Manga & Anime Club. For December’s meeting, we’ll be covering “Snow White with the Red Hair,” by Sorata Akidzuki. “Although her name means ‘snow white,’ Shirayuki is a cheerful, red-haired girl living in the country of Tanbarun who works diligently as an apothecary at her herbal shop. Her life changes drastically when she is noticed by the silly prince of Tanbarun, Prince Raji ... Unwilling to give up her freedom, Shirayuki cuts her long red hair and escapes into the forest, where she is rescued from Raji by Zen Wistalia, the second prince of a neighboring country, and his two aides. Hoping to repay her debt to the trio someday, Shirayuki sets her sights on pursuing a career as the court herbalist in Zen’s country, Clarines.” (IMDb) Afterwards, we’ll make winter potion bottles.
Keep the cold weather blues away with our Winter Reading Bingo! Pick up your sheet starting Dec.19 during our all-day kickoff, then complete the cozy objectives in a row of five and turn in your sheet by Jan. 31 to enter into a prize drawing. There will be prizes for Children, Teens, and Adults.
