Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! Don’t forget our summer catalog is out and jam-packed with everything happening this summer. We have events for all ages, from movie nights and crafts to magicians and an end of the year Mario Party. As far as events this week, today we have Genealogy Thursday at 11 a.m. Stop by with any genealogical questions you may have and our reference librarian will be happy to help you find those family roots. At 5:30 p.m. on May 16 is this month’s Teen Manga and Anime Club. Each month, teens get the chance to read a different manga, then at the monthly meeting, we discuss that manga and watch the first episode of the anime along with a related activity. This time we are taking it easy and celebrating the end of the school year by relaxing with several episodes of this month’s anime.
Tuesday, May 21 at 11 a.m. will, of course, be Tech Tuesday followed by Open Book Club at 7 p.m. This month we will be discussing “The Glass Sentence” by S. E. Grove. “Boston, 1891. Sophia Tims comes from a family of explorers and cartologers who, for generations, have been traveling and mapping the New World – a world changed by the Great Disruption of 1799, when all the continents were flung into different time periods. Eight years ago, her parents left her with her uncle Shadrack, the foremost cartologer in Boston, and went on an urgent mission. They never returned. Life with her brilliant, absent-minded, adored uncle has taught Sophia to take care of herself. Then Shadrack is kidnapped. And Sophia, who has rarely been outside of Boston, is the only one who can search for him. Together with Theo, a refugee from the West, she travels over rough terrain and uncharted ocean, encounters pirates and traders, and relies on a combination of Shadrack’s maps, common sense, and her own slantwise powers of observation. Thursday the 23rd in addition to Genealogy Thursday at 11 a.m. we will also have this month’s Silver Screen Society Film Club meeting at 7 p.m. For this month’s meeting, we will be watching the film “The House,” a British, stop-motion, animated anthology spanning three entirely different universes but all taking place in the same building. Each beautifully animated story deals with themes of madness, wealth, and the pursuit of true happiness.
