Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! I wanted to remind everyone about our ongoing Friends of the Library book sale now through the end of July. Snag some amazing deals on books, movies, puzzles, and more. I also wanted to announce that we now have the VR headsets through Saturday, July 26. Come experience history in a brand new, immersive way.
In addition to our regular Genealogy Thursday today at 11 a.m., Dry Lake Brewing is hosting our Broadway Musical Trivia this evening at 7 p.m. Test your knowledge of everything from “Hello, Dolly!” to “Hamilton” for the chance to win fabulous prizes and free beer.
Friday, July 25, we have our next Silver Screen Society meeting. Come for the delicious popcorn and the free movie, and stay for the rousing discussion. This month, we will be showing one of Steven Spielberg’s latest masterpieces. This movie follows young Sammy Fabelman, an aspiring filmmaker who grew up in post-World War II Arizona. Sammy explores how the power of films can help him process the shattering family secrets he uncovers. Imbued with Spielberg’s passion for the craft, this movie is sure to make anyone fall in love with the art of filmmaking.
Also happening right now is our Community Afghan Silent Auction. The blanket was made with donated granny squares from our wonderful patrons. It is being auctioned off in a silent auction at the Great Bend Public Library, and 100% of the proceeds from the auction will go to the Community Food Bank of Barton County. We are very excited to be auctioning off something made by our community that can aid a local establishment. We feel this is another great opportunity to serve those in our community in a new way. As a library, we are all about public service, and this is just another way we can provide that. In truth, we are just the facilitators. All of the squares and many more, enough to make another whole blanket, were donated by patrons who wanted to support this project. I hope that we will have the same outpouring of support for the auction that we did for the project. If you bid on the afghan, not only will you take home a one-of-a-kind, handmade piece, but you’ll also be supporting a great cause, helping neighbors in need, and spreading warmth in more ways than one.
