Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! As a quick reminder, if you weren’t able to make it to our kick-off, you can still register for our summer reading program by stopping by and getting a bag for your age group. All you have to do is read this June and July for the chance to win some really fabulous prizes at the end of summer. Adults and teens are competing for a variety of amazing prizes, while children will be competing for a chance to come to an exclusive, end-of-summer party where they will get to custom tie-dye their own teddy bears.
First, I would like to wish everyone a happy Juneteenth today, June 19. To celebrate the holiday, you can join us for Genealogy Thursday today at 11 a.m. to learn about your family history. Who knows, you may have ancestors who were part of the first Juneteenth celebration in Texas. At 5:30 p.m., new and seasoned Japanese visual culture fans are invited to join our Teen Manga & Anime Club. Each month we try out a new series by reading the first volume of a manga before meeting to discuss it and watch the first episode of the corresponding anime. Stick around afterwards for a related activity, which could be anything from a craft to a competition. For June’s club meeting, we’ll be covering “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe. “Elf mage Frieren and her courageous fellow adventurers have defeated the Demon King and brought peace to the land. But Frieren will long outlive the rest of her former party. How will she come to understand what life means to the people around her?” – Goodreads) After the discussion, we’ll do some adventure photography and learn about a resident librarian’s recent trip to Japan!
Friday, lace up your cleats and grab five of your favorite Mushroom Kingdom residents to face off against friends and foes in intense 5 v 5 battles of a game that combines soccer, rugby, and unsporstman-like behavior into one action-packed sport where anything goes! Punch, tackle or bomb opponents to get the ball back on your side, then charge up super strikes to make sure there’s no chance the goalie is stopping or even surviving your next goal while we play Mario Strikers Battle League during Casual Game Friday from 3:15- 4:45 p.m. After that at 7 p.m. the Silver Screen Society is back. For this month’s movie, we will follow famed but tormented artist Vincent van Gogh, portrayed by the amazingly talented William Dafoe. The film covers van Gogh in his final years in Arles, France, painting masterworks of the natural world that surrounds him. Stay after the movie for a rousing discussion.
Next Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., join us for Story Time. For those a bit too old for Story Time but not old enough to attend teen events, we also have Tween Scene Studio from 10:30-11:15 a.m. This week, it’s dance party time! Tweens going into grades 3-5, get your groove on and see if you can keep up the rhythm to a variety of songs from chart-topping hits to classic tracks in the Just Dance game series. We also have Tech Tuesday at 11 a.m,. followed by Genealogy Corner at 5 p.m. This time we will be focusing on genealogy for complete beginners and how to get started on your family search.
For next week’s Wonder-Filled Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.,we will be getting a visit from Smoky Hills PBS. Miss Jessica Bowman will be here to share a story and lead us in a craft. We will also watch an episode of one of PBS’s captivating cartoons.
In addition to our regular Genealogy Thursday in-house on June 26 at 11 a.m., head on down to Dry Lake Brewing at 7 p.m. on June 26 for our Art Trivia. Put on your smock and grab a paint brush, because we will be quizzing you on anything and everything from the world of art.
