The Sterling College Jazz Band performs at Hutchinson High School earlier this year. The group will present a concert Sunday afternoon before heading to Western Kansas to perform for Hugoton High School on Monday.

The Sterling College Jazz Band will take the stage for an afternoon of high-energy and timeless music at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, in Upper Wilson Hall on campus, 125 Cooper Ave. in Sterling. The concert is free and open to the public.

Under the direction of Larry Brownlee, the 17-member ensemble will present a dynamic program that spans genres and generations. Audiences can expect the driving swing of “It Don’t Mean a Thing” by Duke Ellington, the romantic lyricism of “My Funny Valentine” by Rodgers and Hart, and a bold jazz-infused take on “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns N’ Roses.

Blending Big Band standards, selections from the Great American Songbook, and unexpected rock arrangements, the concert promises something for every listener. With a full complement of instrumentalists and a passion for live performance, the Sterling College Jazz Band delivers both precision and excitement in equal measure.

In addition to their on-campus performances, the Jazz Band serves as Music Ambassadors for Sterling College, traveling to high schools across Kansas to promote jazz, band music, and the college’s music program. The ensemble has visited six schools this year and will make its final outreach appearance on March 30 in Hugoton, bringing their energy and musicianship to students in western Kansas.

Admission is free, making it an ideal opportunity for the community to enjoy an engaging afternoon of live music. For more information about the Sterling College music department go to www.sterling.edu/arts
