Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! As a quick reminder, if you weren’t able to make it to our kickoff, you can still register for our summer reading program by stopping by and getting a bag for your age group. All you have to do is read this June and July, and you will be entered in for the chance to win some really fabulous prizes at the end of summer. Adults and teens are competing for a variety of amazing prizes, while children will be competing for a chance to come to an exclusive, end-of-summer party where they will get to custom tie-dye their own teddy bears!
After Genealogy Thursday this morning, June 12, at 11 a.m., check out our Teen Summer Flick at 3:30 p.m. “Forced into early retirement by a degenerative illness, former baseball player Ray Waller moves into a new house with his wife and two children. He hopes that the backyard swimming pool will be fun for the kids and provide physical therapy for himself. However, a dark secret from the home’s past soon unleashes a malevolent force that drags the family into the depths of inescapable terror.” – Google. Wrap up the evening with Adult Craft Night at 6 p.m. If you’ve been wanting to try your hand at the latest book lovers’ craze sweeping the nation, now’s your chance to design your own beautifully painted book edges to add some flair to your favorite novel.
Be sure to wish the fathers and father figures in your life a very happy Father’s Day this weekend. Sunday is also the last day to sign up for our TeenBookCrate and TweenBookCrate, each filled with exclusive goodies and activities. Visit greatbendpl.info/teens and greatbendpl.info/childrens before Monday and fill out the Google Form to reserve your spot on the list. Everyone who gets a box is expected to read the included mystery library book, fill out the feedback card, and return the box and library book by the due date determined at checkout (valid library card in good standing required). The rest of the goodies are yours to keep!
Next Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., join us for Story Time. For those a bit too old for Story Time but not old enough to attend teen events, we also have Tween Scene Studio from 10:30-11:15 a.m. This week, tweens going into grades 3-5 will be working on Escher Eye Art Projects in celebration of the artist’s birthday. We also have Tech Tuesday at 11 a.m., followed by Open Book Club at 7 p.m. This month’s title is The Art Thief by Michael Finkel, a story of art, crime, passion, love, and an insatiable need to possess beauty no matter the cost.
For this week’s Wonder-Filled Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., come and explore life on the Plains of America with the Flint Hills Discovery Center . They are visiting from Manhattan to help us learn about the bison who roamed the central area of North America and the life of a cowboy who drove cattle from Texas to the markets in Kansas City and beyond.
We’d like to wish everyone a happy Juneteenth for next Thursday, June 19. Celebrate the holiday by learning about your family history during Genealogy Thursday at 11 a.m. Who knows, you may have ancestors who were part of the first Juneteenth celebration in Texas!
At 5:30 p.m., new and seasoned Japanese visual culture fans are invited to join our Teen Manga & Anime Club. Each month we try out a new series by reading the first volume of a manga before meeting to discuss it and watch the first episode of the corresponding anime. Stick around afterwards for a related activity, which could be anything from a craft to a competition.
For June’s club meeting, we’ll be covering “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe. “Elf mage Frieren and her courageous fellow adventurers have defeated the Demon King and brought peace to the land. But Frieren will long outlive the rest of her former party. How will she come to understand what life means to the people around her?” – Goodreads. After the discussion, we’ll do some adventure photography and learn about a resident librarian’s recent trip to Japan.
