Police say a Great Bend man fired multiple rifle shots,  including rounds toward responding officers, during a tense hour-and-a-half standoff Thursday night that damaged several vehicles in a residential neighborhood.

Ryan D. Lang, 35, was taken into custody shortly after 9 p.m. following the incident near 24th and Polk streets.

Officers with the Great Bend Police Department were dispatched at approximately 7:28 p.m. Thursday, March 12, to 3318 24th St. after reports that a man with a rifle had fired several shots. The initial report indicated the suspect may have fired into the air and possibly toward a neighbor.

Police said when the first officer arrived, Lang fired in the officer’s direction, striking a tree and the patrol vehicle.

Additional officers and deputies from the Barton County Sheriff’s Office responded and established a perimeter around the property while nearby streets were blocked.

Authorities said Lang fired several additional shots during the incident. One round struck a parked vehicle in the 2300 block of Polk Street, while another was fired toward an officer at the intersection of 24th and Polk, passing just over the officer’s patrol vehicle. A third shot was believed to have been fired into the air.

Investigators later learned at least two other vehicles driving through the area before officers arrived were also struck by gunfire.

During the standoff, Lang was seen moving around the property with the rifle, going between the front yard, porch and inside the residence as officers maintained the perimeter.

After about 90 minutes, Lang exited the house without the rifle. Officers and deputies — assisted by a Barton County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit — approached him, but he retreated back inside.

Officers followed him into the residence, where Lang was taken into custody after officers deployed a Taser.

Lang was transported to the Barton County Jail and booked on multiple charges including:

  • Attempted second-degree murder

  • Aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer

  • Criminal discharge of a firearm

  • Criminal damage to property

  • Interference with a law enforcement officer

  • Possession of a controlled substance

Jail records show Lang is being held on a $250,000 cash or surety bond.

No injuries were reported.

Police said officers will return to the area to check for additional property damage. Residents who live in or traveled through the neighborhood and believe their property was damaged are encouraged to contact the police department.

The Great Bend Fire Department assisted at the scene.
