The Farmers and Merchants Bank was constructed on the corner of Broadway and Main in 1886. The building burned the night of Sept. 20, 1983, from a lightning strike.

The Barton County Historical Society May program will be led by local historian Justin Engleman, at 7 p.m., Monday, May 19.  Attendees are asked to meet at the Jack Kilby sculpture in front of the courthouse. The tour is free for members of the society and those under 16, and is $5 for non-members.

Find out where F.W. Woolworth, Lischesky Dry Goods, the NuAces Saloon, Funk Furniture, Citizens National Bank, J.S. Dillon and Son Store #2, JCPenney, the White Way Cafe and the Farmers and Merchants Bank were located in downtown Great Bend.

Engleman will also lead attendees through the former Masonic Temple and the offices above Renue, as well as talk about the former occupants of the buildings along the 1300 and 1400 blocks of Main Street.

Attendees should wear comfortable shoes and be able to navigate steps to enter the various buildings.

The Barton County Historical Society Museum and Village is located just south of the Arkansas River bridge at 85 South U.S. 281, Great Bend. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
