The Great Bend City Council has scheduled a budget work session for 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 14, City Administrator Logan Burns said.
Reports at this Monday’s City Council meeting came from Burns and from Sara Arnberger, the outgoing director of Great Bend Economic Development.
Burns started his report by introducing Addison “Addie” Crites, the City’s new public relations director, and commenting on the success of the July 3 fireworks show at the Expo Complex.
“I thought this was one of the better shows that we’ve seen,” Burns said. “A big thank you goes out to the Wald and Company (fireworks), the fire department, police department, public works, public lands, Amanda Gaddis (at the Convention and Visitors Bureau) and then Shannon at Eagle Radio for all their time and support to make that happen.”
Striping at 10th Street intersections continues and is expected to take another week.
Wheatland Electric will replace the pole at Broadway and Patton Road so there will be stop signs up.
Heizer Park work continues with pouring concrete in front of the bathrooms. The Kiwanis Club has donated $30,000 toward a shade structure at the park.
“And then, lastly, our continued thoughts and prayers go out to the Kanopolis drowning victims from this past weekend, along with all of the victims of the flash flooding in Texas,” Burns said. “Thank you to the fire department for their efforts in the search at Kanopolis Lake.”
Arnberger’s final report
Arnberger said the Ignite Rural Business competition is well underway. There were 22 applicants, including some “very creative businesses.” This week, the GBED Board will decide which of these businesses will move on to the first round of the 2025 competition.
The next Core Entrepreneurship class starts on Sept. 3. “If you are considering opening or starting a business, you won’t want to miss this class.”
The next Fridays on Forest event will be on July 25. “A huge thank you to the Great Bend Alive committee for continuing that project,” she said.
“And with that, I say this is my last Council meeting, addressing all of you. I want to say thank you so much for all of the support. It’s been absolutely wonderful working with all of you. I love Great Bend, I’ve loved this role, so thank you. I’m gonna step away so I don’t get emotional but yes, I truly mean thank you.”
