Twenty-five outstanding students across Great Bend Public Schools received a special reward this week for a year of dedication and consistency – a brand-new bicycle. Now in its 14th year, the Perfect Attendance Bike Program continues to celebrate elementary students who achieve the milestone of perfect attendance throughout the school year.
Assemblies were held at each of the district’s five elementary schools, where students were honored in front of their peers, families and teachers.
“Congratulations to the students who have stepped up to the challenges of grade school and have completed another successful school year,” said Karen Shaner, program organizer. “We’re incredibly proud of their hard work and grateful to the families who make daily attendance a priority. Their commitment makes all the difference.”
The effort is led by Shaner and fellow volunteer Jane Isern, with generous support from local businesses, organizations and individuals. Walmart has been a steadfast partner, providing financial contributions as well as bike assembly and storage.
“This incredible program highlights the impact of daily attendance,” said Khris Thexton, USD 428 Superintendent. “Showing up matters – not just for academic success, but for building habits that lead to success in life. We are proud of our students and grateful to the families, community donors, and volunteers who support this effort year after year.”
The Pilot Club of Great Bend also contributed by providing a new, properly fitted bike helmet to each recipient, reinforcing the group’s mission to promote brain safety and health.
