The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will discuss next year’s tuition and fees during its monthly study session. The meeting will start at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, in Room F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. No action is taken at the monthly study session but Vice President of Administration Mark Dean will present a recommendation that the board will vote on later this month.
Also on the agenda: Dean will present the January financial statement and Director of Financial Aid Myrna Perkins will discuss changes in Gainful Employment/Financial Value Transparency (GE/FVT) regulations. Jakki Maser, Barton’s licensed professional counselor, will talk about the Student Wellness Action Team (SWAT).
Tuition and fees
Starting in the Fall semester, fees for students who live in Barton County could increase by $2 per credit-hour with no increase for in-county tuition, bringing total tuition and fees to $117. For other categories of students, the administration recommends a tuition increase of $3 ($5 for online courses) per credit-hour. Most students will see a $2 fee increase. However, the recommended fee increase is $0 for online courses and for college programs at Fort Riley, Leavenworth and Grandview Plaza.
Currently, in-county students pay $67 per credit-hour for tuition and $48 for fees. Out-of-county tuition is $78, out-of-state tuition is $107 and international tuition is $170, with fees staying the same for all. The college has offered lower tuition in Barton County residents since 2011, when the board of trustees approved a $3 per credit-hour scholarship to offset a $3 increase..
BartOnline tuition is $150 per credit-hour and fees are $10. The recommendation is to increase tuition by $5 and leave the fees unchanged.
High school students will still be able to enroll in certain classes for $50 per credit-hour.
Overall, by increasing tuition as recommended, the college would receive nearly $379,000 additional revenue for the same number of credit-hours. The recommended fee increase would generate an additional $77,750.
When considering increases, Barton administrators look at last year’s tuition and fees at all Kansas community colleges as reported to the Kansas Board of Regents.
The trustees will also review a list of individual course fees. These typically pay for items such as uniforms, lab kits or tools that the students take with them; certification tests; specialized insurance; subscriptions to services; and consumables.

The study session agendas also include a list of items already approved by Barton President Dr. Marcus Garstecki, which do not require board action. In the past month, he approved the following:
