A 90-minute standoff ended in arrest of a 33-year-old Great Bend man at a Great Bend residence Wednesday afternoon.

Great Bend Police Chief Steve Haulmark reported that at approximately 1:35 p.m. Wednesday, GBPD officers responded to a residence at 1702 Morton St. in response to a report of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault.

While responding to the call, officers were advised that a family member reported to 911 that a son was holding his mother at knife point inside of the residence. Upon arrival, officers attempted to make contact with residents inside the home, but were unable to do so. Meanwhile, Kansas Highway Patrol officers assisted GBPD in quickly surrounding the residence while a search warrant was being drafted.

Nearby Park Elementary School and Great Bend High School were placed in precautionary lockdown as per USD 428 security protocol, while law enforcement assembled at the front of the residence and established a traffic control perimeter. A GBPD K-9 team was dispatched to the scene but never deployed.

After approximately 45 minutes, GBPD officers gained entry through the rear of the residence and took the male suspect, identified as Patton Mills, 33, of Great Bend, into custody without incident. A female victim located inside had multiple injuries consistent with blunt force trauma. She was transported by EMS for further medical treatment.

Lockdowns were lifted at both schools shortly before 3 p.m. as Mills was escorted to Barton County Jail.

He was booked on charges of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated domestic battery, with bond set at $500,000. He was additionally booked on a Kansas Department of Corrections arrest and detain warrant issued for parole violation, with bond set at no bond.

This investigation is ongoing. Anyone with further information regarding this incident or any other crime is encouraged to contact the Great Bend Police Department at 620-793-4120 or Crimestoppers at 620-792-1300 or online at p3tips.com.
