There is still time to enter the Pawnee County Fair Quilt Block Contest, sponsored by Country Living in Larned. There will be prizes for first, second and third place in this open-class event.
To enter, stop by the Pawnee County Extension Office and pick up a quilt block kit for $5. These contain three pieces of fabric and all three fabrics must be used in the block. The Pawnee County Fair Association Board of Directors has purchased the materials for the blocks.
The entries are to be turned in with other open-class and 4-H exhibits between the hours of 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, at the Larned Community Center.
Entrants will make a quilt block of contemporary or traditional design using any technique or pattern of their choice. The entries need to be a pieced block; NO appliqued blocks will be accepted. Exhibitors may enter any number of quilt blocks.
The blocks must NOT be quilted. The finished blocks must measure 12.5 inches square from raw edge to raw edge. They will become the property of the Pawnee County Fair Association and a quilt will be constructed from the blocks and sold at the 2026 fair. Likewise, last year’s finished quilt will be sold at auction this year with proceeds from the quilt going to the Fair Improvement Fund.
The quilt will be the first item sold at the Glenn Mull Family Memorial 4-H Livestock Sale at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at the John M. Lewis & Sons Livestock Center.
Blocks will be judged by a quilting judge on the following criteria: workmanship, best use of fabric, visual impact, design and the technique used.
