STAFFORD — Hard to believe that teachers are already hard at work getting ready for school next week. Thank goodness with the temperatures we are having that the school is air conditioned. Those of us at an undisclosed age remember how hard life was without AC. How did we survive? The “Good Old Days” weren’t completely GOLDEN!

We will miss the kids that have shared our space this summer. Summer Reading was a great Ocean Adventure. We had over 300 people of all ages participate in the program throughout the summer. Thanks to Sandy and her love of kids that leads to wonderful adventures and crafts. Thanks also to the Stafford Recreation that share their time and kids with us.

Thank goodness we still have our Monday morning preschool group coming for fun and books or Sandy and I would be in extreme withdrawal for lack of wee voices.

I have been reading the “Red River of the North” and “Leah’s Garden” series by Lauraine Snelling. They are both great series of the settling of the Great Plains. Lauraine has a great talent for developing characters and plots that reflect the struggles and triumphs of this unique time in our nation’s history. I think they resonate with me because it is a reflection of how our ancestors (many branches of Jeff’s and my family tree) came to Stafford County. Both series are here on our shelves, “Leah’s Garden” in Large Print and “Red River Valley” in our regular print fiction collection.

Jennifer Gleason of Kansas State Extension 21 Central District is developing an exciting program to help us prevent and minimize effects of falls. We all can identify with how the fear of falls has impacted our lives. Jennifer will be with us at the library Aug. 26 in the afternoon to inform us of her new program and help us reclaim our ability to walk with confidence. Come join us for this introductory meeting that might lead you to continue in a four-week program to improve your balance and avoid falls.

I am also looking forward to our Recently Read evening also on Aug. 26 at 5:30. It’s a fun time of visiting books and authors. Come join us!

This week, celebrate our schools, teachers, staff and students. Support them in their new year of education and extra curricular activities. Watch for those blind corners on country roads and enjoy the green growing crops and nose to the ground livestock.
