Good fences make good neighbors – and good zoos, apparently. The Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo recently finished replacing the majority of old wooden fencing throughout the zoo, including around the bear and bison exhibits. Zoo Director Ashley Burdick said they’ve been working on this project for a while.
“There was a lot of fencing that needed to be replaced,” she said. “The new fence is safer for our animals and visitors, and gives better viewing opportunities for those in strollers and wheelchairs.” She said the metal fencing will last significantly longer than the wooden alternative.
Burdick also provided an update on Luke the lion, who is continuing to heal from his surgery he underwent last month. He had an injury to his tail and the surgery was to prevent further injuries or issues. While he continues to heal, the area next to his yard remains closed.
“We want the area quiet and calm while he continues to heal,” she said. “You can still view him and the female lions from the areas that are open; visitors just can’t get up as close at this time.”
Annual meeting
Coming up next month, the Great Bend Zoological Society’s Annual meeting starts at 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 11. This is an opportunity for zoo members to partake in voting for any changes to the by-laws, vote for new board members, learn about what the Zoological Society worked on this year, enjoy a meal and end with a tour of the zoo with the keepers.
The purpose of the Zoo Society is to support the Zoo in its efforts to provide educational and public benefit to the community. Members’ financial support helps to develop and improve the Zoo.
An annual membership for an individual or for an entire family costs only $25. Membership also entitles supporters to unique activities including a “first look” when new animals arrive at the zoo, “Zoo News” emails and quarterly newsletters, a 20% discount in the zoo gift shop, free wagon rental for the kids, and $1 mobility cart rental. The membership card is often good for discounts at other zoos as well.
You must be a current zoo member to participate in the annual meeting and RSVPs are needed by October 1 by emailing gbzoosociety@gmail.com or calling the zoo at 620-793-4226.
