An inmate's death at the Barton County Jail last Saturday was ruled a suicide, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
The KBI released the following statement:
“On Jan. 11, around 9 p.m., Conner Clifton, 28, was found hanging in his individual cell at the Barton County Detention Facility. EMS was called and life-saving measures were attempted on Clifton, but he was pronounced deceased. The Barton County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to respond. KBI investigates deaths that occur in Kansas jails and prisons via state statutes, unless the inmate who dies was being regularly attended by a physician.
“On Jan. 13, an autopsy was completed and his manner of death was ruled suicide.”
Records show Conner M. Clifton was booked into the Barton County Jail on Dec. 22, 2024, on a Barton County District Court case for interference with a law enforcement officer, battery of a law enforcement officer, failure to give driver’s license, expired registration and no insurance. He was also booked on a Stafford County District Court warrant for criminal use of a weapon, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. On each case, bond was set at $2,500 cash or surety.
