A smoke alarm going off in an unoccupied apartment on 16th St. Terrance woke someone in the complex, who then called 911 around 3 a.m. Tuesday.
Battalion Chief Kevin Stansfield with the Great Bend Fire Department said firefighters were dispatched to the Somerset Place apartments at 3:13 a.m. and they discovered a malfunctioning furnace was pushing smoke throughout the apartment.
“It didn’t amount to much damage,” he said. There were no flames and when the gas and electricity were shut off the fire put itself out. Firefighters ventilated the apartment. They were at the scene for about two hours.
