BONNER SPRINGS — Douglas D. Friedly, 76, of Bonner Springs, Kan., passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2025. A Rosary will be prayed at 5 p.m., followed by visitation from 5:15-7 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2025 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 5501 Monticello Road, Shawnee, Kan. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 30, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial at Bonner Springs Cemetery, Bonner Springs, Kan. Memorial contributions may be made to the Knights of Columbus and/or education fund for his grandchildren, c/o Arlene Friedly.

Doug was born May 18, 1949, in Great Bend, Kan. to Leonard H. and Bonnie J. (Watt) Friedly. He was a graduate of Claflin High School in 1967 and Fort Hays College in 1971. Doug was a Speech and Drama teacher for 33 years at Phillipsburg High School, Phillipsburg, Kan. and he enjoyed announcing sports activities and judging debate and forensics events. Then he worked at Ameristar Casino for five years and then Enterprise until his death.

On Aug. 30, 1969, he married Arlene M. Tinkel at St. Rose Catholic Church in Great Bend, Kan. Family was first for Doug, enjoying the grandkids activities, playing golf, cards (playing his rules), and camping. 

Doug was preceded in death by his parents; sister Nancy Conde; in-laws Albert and Laura Tinkel; and his nephew Trevor Cates.  Doug is survived by his wife of 55 years, Arlene; son Duane and his wife Amy, Shawnee, Kan.; daughter Dawn and her husband Brian of Shawnee, Kan.; grandchildren Saige, Jaxson, Tenley, Kyndal, Madelyn, Bridawn, Renick; brothers Craig (Julie), Roger (Joree); sisters Mariann (Gary) Shook, Connie (Bob) Lowe; brothers-in-law Joe (Conde), Louis (Janice) Tinkel, Alvita (Bob) Cates; and many nieces and nephews.
