Sister Alvina Miller, 106, died Feb. 3, 2025, at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse in Great Bend. She was born Feb. 17, 1918, in Catherine, Kan., the daughter of Adam and Alvina Miller. She entered the Dominican Sisters community in 1932 and pronounced vows in 1935. This year marks her 90th  year of religious profession.

Sister Alvina began her ministry as a teacher serving in Wichita, Garden City, and Great Bend, Kan. She served the St. John Evangelist Parish in Hoisington, Kan. as a Pastoral Minister. She served as a Medical Librarian at St. Catherine’s Hospital in Garden City and Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. When she moved to the Motherhouse, she served as the community’s librarian. Sr. Alvina enjoyed knitting, gardening, and baking. She was a voracious reader even utilizing audio books for the blind after she could no longer see well enough to read. Sr. Alvina wrote her autobiography entitled “The Mill of a Miller” documenting the story of her family, her call to religious life, and her experiences. 

Sister Alvina was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Arthur and Cecil; sister Amelia Miller Meis; and niece Jackie Price. She is survived by sisters-in-law Gloria and Mary; niece Jenifer and nephew Jeff; as well as the Dominican Sisters of Peace.  

A Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 7. Both will take place at the Sisters’ Convent. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in honor of Sister Alvina may be sent to Dominican Sisters of Peace, 2320 Airport Drive, Columbus, OH 43219-2098.
