Cougars sweep Colby 7-0, 19-0 for first place

The Barton Community College baseball team parlayed a pair of shutouts from Antonio Mendez and Anthony Treto to dominate Colby 7-0 and 19-0 to regain first place in the Jayhawk West.

Mendez (4-1) yielded four hits with six strikeouts. Mendez retired 12 of his final 13 hitters. Treto matched Mendez with a career high 10-strikeouts with  five-hitter.

The Cougars (23-8, 14-4 Jayhawk) lead Cloud (14-5) by one game while the Trojans drop to 22-13, 10-4 Jayhawk. The Cougars travel to Colby Sunday.

Kyle Walker sparked the lineup going 4-for-6 from the seventh spot with a double and driving in three runs all coming in Barton's game two eight run, sixth inning.

Ayden Hadley guided the Cougars runs production on the day driving in seven of the Cougars 24 RBIs. The sophomore keyed the opening run of the day with a single before driving home six in the nightcap with a first inning run scoring double, two-run fifth inning home run for his seventh of the year and two-RBI triple in the sixth, combining to hit for the cycle over the doubleheader.

Cesar Gomez added two of his three RBIs in the backend coming on a pair of singles in the Cougars eight run sixth joining Tyler JanssenWyatt Yetter and Kyle Graves fabricating a trio of hits apiece towards Barton's 25 hits in the pair of contests.

Barton combined for a trio of home runs. Oviatt delivering his lone hit of the day behind his three-run sixth inning blast in the opener tailed by game two round trippers from John Connors fourth inning leadoff solo-shot and Hadley's 2-1 count no-doubter to right in the sixth.

COUGARS 7, COLBY 0 (G1) — Hayden Oviatt delivered the big hit with a 3-run fifth-inning home run.

Ayden Hadley singled home Hunter Alvord and Hadley scored on Wyatt Yetter's first-inning single for a 2-0 lead.

Cesar Gomez singled in Kyle Graves for  3-0 lead after four innings. Oviatt's 3-run Homer scored K Walker and Yetter for a 6-0 lead. Gomez scored on Hadley's sixth-inning groundout for a 7-0 victory.

COUGARS 19, COLBY 0 (G2) — Treto (3-2) induced a pair of double plays with a first inning 4-6-3 double play and fourth inning 6-4-3 twin killing. His 10 punchouts came off 90 pitches.

Seven Cougars contributed multi-hit games.

The Cougars roared to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Tyler Janssen scored on Alvord's triple. Alvord scored on Hadley's double. Hadley scored on Kyle Walker's single. John Connors scored on Oviatt's groundball. Janssen scored on Colby's second-inning error for  5-0 lead.
