The Great Bend Bat Cats summer baseball team achieved a rare feat with a pair of shutout wins over the Wichita Wildcats Thursday 1-0 and 10-0 at Al Burns Memorial Field.
The Bat Cats (4-2, 4-0 Jayhawk Collegiate) play at Derby Saturday and return home Monday against Derby.
BAT CATS 1, WILDCATS 0 (G1) — Hoisington's Tony Moore delivered his first summer highlight by scoring the game-winning run in a 1-0 victory. Moore doubled his fun by scoring the game-ending run in the nightcap.
Fort Hays State baseball player Moore singled, advanced to third base on an Elias Leon's double and scored on T.J. Shaw's eighth-inning sacrifice fly. Moore doubled, walked and reached base three times.
A trio of Bat Cats delivered an 8-inning no-hitter. Starter Cooper Annin pitched 42/3 innings and worked around five walks with six strikeouts. Reliever Ryland Khan worked out of Annin's bases-loaded fifth-inning jam by retiring Colton Roberts on a groundout to shortstop Shaw.
After Khan pitched 22/3 innings, Cade Kunz struck out two batters in the eighth inning.
Wildcat Colton Roberts threw five shutout innings. Van Haneberg was tagged with the loss.
BAT CATS 10, WILDCATS 0 (G2) — Great Bend Panther pitcher Carson Umphres completed a double shutout with a 61-pitch, 3-hit gem with seven strikeouts.
Moore walked and scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 first-inning lead. Luke Nohinek singled home Andrugh Yee for a 2-0 lead.
The Bat Cats blew the game open with a 5-run third inning. Caleb Cowan singled home Nohinek. Joey Marker and Moore scored on errors. Peanut Brazille scored on Kyle Walker's single. Moore scored on Deacon Pomeroy's single for a 7-0 lead.
Walker's bases-loaded walk forced home Lane French in a 3-run fifth inning. Brazzle scored on Yee's hit-by-pitch. Moore scored on a Nohinek single.
