KINGMAN — Great Bend's Deacon Pomeroy delivered a bases-loaded triple to spark an 8-1 Jayhawk Collegiate League victory over the Kingman Islanders Saturday.
Oklahoma State-bound Pomeroy tripled home Tony Moore, Caleb Cowan and J.J. Fontana to ignite a 6-run ninth inning. Topeka native Pomeroy scored on an Elias Leon double, Leon and Kyle Walker scored on Andrugh Yee's single.
The Bat Cats (9-7, 9-5 Jayhawk) tie Derby (9-5 Jayhawk) to break a recent 1-4 streak.
Bat Cats starter Carson Umphrey (2-1) threw brilliantly with a 6-strikeout, 1-run performance. Left fielder Caleb Cowan delivered the game's defensive gem by throwing out Corey Reese at home on Landon Parks' third-inning single.
Great Bend reliever Ryland Khan struck out four batters in three shutout innings. Khan stranded runners at third and second by striking out Reese and retiring Karston Wall on a seventh-inning fly ball.
Great Bend and Kingman were locked in a pitcher's battle through eight innings.
Kingman's Karston Wall scored on a Caiden Beavers' second-inning bases-loaded walk. Cowan scored on Fontana's sixth-inning squeeze bunt. Walker scored on Cowan's seventh-inning groundout for a 2-1 lead.
Islander starter Logan Snyder kept Kingman close with a solid 62/3 innings. But reliever Cooper Tannahill was unable to record a third out in the ninth inning.
