Colby Eagle standout powers past Cardinals
COLBY GIRLS 45, HOISINGTON 23 — By the time Hoisington figured Shaylee Holzmeister was left-handed, it was too late. Holzmeister outscored the Cardinals 25-23 to spark the Eagles past Hoisington 45-23 in Friday's Larned 3A basketball substate. She converted 10 of 18 field goals. The athletic and quick Eagles used full-court and half-court pressure defense to disrupt Hoisington's offense and force 28 turnovers. The Eagles scored 17 second-chance points and 15 points after turnovers. Colby took advantage when the officials let the teams play a physical style of basketball. Seniors Kelsi Maier and Tianna Lutters each scored seven points. Maier blocked five shots and led the Cardinals in rebounding. The Cardinals converted 6 of 31 field goals (19%) and 4 of 18 shots (22%) from 3-point range. "It wasn't our night. We struggled with turnovers," said Hoisington coach Trina Lutters. "Colby really harassed the basketball." Seniors Maier and Lutters graduate from an 11-11 team that showed potential to outplay No. 1 Halstead for more than a half. "They were our leaders on the court. We couldn't have done this without them," Lutters said. "I'm proud of our team chemistry. We faced adversity, but I'm proud the girls kept working."
