Colgan wins showdown, 2-0
Perennial 2-1A state baseball champion Pittsburg Colgan shut out its biggest challenger Hays Thomas More Prep 2-0 to spice a trio of shutouts Thursday in the 2-1A state baseball championship at the Great Bend Sports Complex. Colgan has won a state record 21 state baseball titles with 13 runner-up trophies.
PITTSBURG COLGAN 2, HAYS TMP 0 — Colgan pitcher Brady VanBecelaere with a showdown with Thomas More Prep pitcher Ty Schmeidler, who struck out 15 batters in 62/3 innings. VanBecelaere finished with three seventh-inning strikeouts.
Colgan's Brady Crossland singled home Nick Duncan and Brady Bettega singled home Crossland in the seventh inning.
VALLEY FALLS 1, MEDICINE LODGE 0 — Valley Falls pitcher Trenton Van Houtan struck out eight batters for a no-hit 7-inning gem.
Valley Falls' Damian Cervantes singled home Grant Meyer after a walk and singles by Matthew Stapp and Hayden Kearney for the walk-off victory off hard-luck loser Jack Schreiner.
REMINGTON 1, ROSSVILLE 0 — Remington pitcher Eli Classen threw a 5-hit shutout. Koby Smeeton singled in Drew Klaasen after a walk and wild pitch for a fifth-inning run off hard-luck loser Cael Horgan.
Rossville reliever Cameron Miller achieved one of the rarest feats in baseball with a 9-pitch "immaculate inning" with three strikeouts.
DOUGLASS 19, CENTRAL HEIGHTS 4 — Douglass Bulldogs Wyatt Laver, Jace Pichler and Bronsyn Kinsley each drove in two runs in a 13-run attack.
