TOPEKA — Central Plains Oiler Camden Stiles (26-3) faced a showdown against Wichita Classical's Isaac Yourdon (27-9) for a third-place 3-1A state tennis trophy.
Yourdon claimed the third-place trophy for Classical with a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Stiles. Classical scored 21 points for third place. The Oilers tied Topeka Cair Paravel for fourth place with 19 points.
"We were really close to getting a trophy," said Central Plains tennis coach Michael Ryan. "We ended up in fourth, two points behind the third-place finisher."
In the quarterfinals, No. 3 seed Stiles downed Wichita Classical's Noah Doom 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. Wichita Collegiate state singles champion Charlie Gentile beat Stiles, 6-0, 6-0 in Saturday's semifinals.
"Camden competed and played really well," Ryan said. "His quarterfinal match was a great win against Doom from Wichita Classical. It was a high-quality 3-set match that lasted 3 hours. In the third-place match, Camden played really well in the last two sets. His chance to knock off Yourdon from Classical just came up a little short."
Oilers Paxton Dody/Peyton Dody (28-7) placed seventh with an 8-6 victory over Sterling's Ben Bierstedt/Zac Wohler. Topeka Cair Paravel's state runner-up Eric Buchenau/Drew Fay downed Dody/Dody 6-2, 6-4. Wichita Collegiate state champion Charlie Gentile downed Stiles 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals.
"I was happy and pleased with Camden and the Dodys' weekend,'" Ryan said. "The Dodys had a really solid last tournament together, so it was bittersweet. They had stretches where they were playing exceptional tennis. They had a chance to win the second set against the doubles runner up in the quarters, but came up a bit short."
Hoisington (14 points) placed eighth with six state qualifiers returning.
Hoisington's Jasper Pawlowski (24-8) finished eighth with a 3-3 record after losing 8-2 to Levi Mies of Conway Springs. Hoisington's Brody Rossman (25-5) finished 2-4 at state with a 12th-place finish in an 8-6 setback to Meade's Samuel Lynn.
"Our singles players, Jasper Pawlowski and Brody Rossman, played amazing," said Hoisington coach Jordan Mooney. "They got through day 1, and managed to come back day 2 and medal. Jasper was seeded ninth and finished eighth. Brody was seeded 14th and earned 12th. The goal is always to to meet or beat the seed you're given. The guys who medaled did that."
Smoky Valley's Jack Bieker/Pierce Keller defeated Hoisington's Gabriel Pawlowski/Leyton Mooney 8-6 for 11th place. Pawloski/Mooney (14-12) finished with a 4-2 state record.
"Leyton Mooney and Gabe Pawlowski played really well day 1," Mooney said. "They lost a tough tiebreaker in their first match to a solid Trego team. But they were able to win the matches needed on the backside to get to day 2. They were seeded 18th and finished 12th, which shows how hard they worked. Day 2 was filled with tough competition. The guys played with a lot of heart and played teams close."
Mooney is anxious to see the Cardinals improve their Central Kansas League placing and quality all six players for 3-1A state in 2026.
"Our state experience will help. I’m expecting the team to carry over the success," he said. "Four guys placed .They know what it feels like. They'll come back and do better. Our doubles team that didn’t make it day 2 knows what it takes to get there. Overall, it was an awesome season for a young team. The future looks bright. I'm proud of all the hard work."
Ellinwood's Ty Hammeke/Ethan Schlochtermier (25-8) downed Conway Springs's Eli Benge/Joe Beck 8-5 to finish ninth. Hammeke/Schlochtermeier played their best tennis and finished 4-2 at state after a sixth-place regional finish.
Wichita Collegiate scored 58 points to clinch a state record 28th state tennis title. In championship matches, Gentile beat teammate Amir Knicha, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, and Collegiate's Carter Drumright/Maddox Drumright, Wichita Collegiate defeated Topeka Cair Paravel's Eric Buchenau/Drew Fay, 6-2, 6-7 (7-5), 6-0.
