Cardinal softball on target to clinch home site

HOISINGTON — The Hoisington/Central Plains softball team split a doubleheader with Hays Thomas More Prep to virtually assure the Cardinals of a 4A home regional site. The Cardinals won the opener 9-5 and lost the second game 10-3.

The Cardinals (17-7) are tied with Buhler (17-7) for the fourth seed, but the Crusaders will be a huge underdog against McPherson (24-0) Tuesday.

CARDINALS 9, TMP 5 (G1) — The Cardinals rallied from a 5-4 deficit with a 5-run sixth inning. Reese Aylward's triple scored Marly Brewer, Macie Strong and Kylie Kempke for the game-winning runs. Brynn Tarlton scored on Gabby Reif's groundout to start the 5-run inning. 

Brewer scored on Reif's double to start a 3-run first frame. Strong and Reif scored on an error. Tarlton hit a fourth-inning homer.

Cardinal ace pitcher Ellie Crawford (10-5) struck out seven batters against the Monarchs (24-2).

Monarch Brooke Koenigsman drove in two runs.
