CENTRAL PLAINS GIRLS 61, SMITH CENTER 57

RUSSELL — Brynna Hammeke rescued the No. 1 state-ranked Central Plains Oilers with 28 points, 18 after halftime, for a hard-fought 61-57 victory over No. 4 ranked Smith Center in Tuesday's Amos Morris Basketball Tournament. Kassidy Nixon contributed 17 points and Madison McGuire added 15 points as the Oilers' trio scored 60 points.

The Oilers saw an 11-point lead sliced to three points before Hammeke's steal and layup secured the victory.

Maile Hrabe scored 20 points and Ashlyn Long added 12 points.

MEADE – No. 4 state-ranked 1A Pawnee Heights missed two chances to tie in a heartbreaking 66-65 non-league loss to Meade in Friday’s basketball opener 

“Davin Hamby missed an open three for the tie and Alec Carlson had his 3-pointer blocked,” said Pawnee Heights coach Rick Carlson. “Dakota Ryan got the rebound and shot a 2-pointer as time ran out.”

Alec Carlson led the Tigers with 21 points and Adam Hands contributed 20 points. The Tigers converted 18 of 36 free throws.

Meade’s Trace Hedgwood and Brock Keith led four players in double figures with 12 points apiece.
