ELLINWOOD — After a challenging start in 2023-24 with a 1-5 record, the Ellinwood Eagle girls basketball team has turned the tide in spectacular fashion for the 2024-25 campaign.

Boasting a perfect 6-0 record, the Eagles captured the Kiowa County Shootout tournament title, capped off by a thrilling overtime victory over host Kiowa County.

"What makes this early success impressive is the youth of the team," said Ellinwood basketball coach Greg Maxwell. "The Eagles’ starting lineup has predominantly featured three freshmen and two sophomores, showcasing the potential for a bright future. Despite their inexperience, the young squad has displayed remarkable poise and talent."

The Eagles play competitive defense and work the ball patiently offensively. Sophomore sharpshooter Reece Stickney is averaging 16.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game.

"Reece Stickney has been a key factor in the Eagles’ success," said. " Stickney has established herself as a dynamic force on the court, leading by example with her scoring ability and defensive prowess."

Maxwell wants to see whether the Eagles will compete with defending champion St. John and perennial champion Central Plains in the Central Prairie League.

"With such a promising start and a roster full of young talent, the Ellinwood Eagles are shaping up to be a team to watch," Maxwell said. "As the season progresses, fans eagerly anticipate how far this youthful squad can go."
