HOISINGTON 20, CHENEY 6 — The Cheney Cardinals had no idea what happened, especially the public address announcer who reported that "Halstead" led Cheney 20-6 Friday night.
State-ranked Hoisington avenged a 47-18 setback to 3A powerhouse Cheney with a resounding 20-6 victory keyed by a trio of Taylen Morales touchdowns and 133 yards passing by quarterback Mason Martin. Brody Pfannenstiel had three catches for 64 yards.
Morales gained 100 yards rushing and sealed the victory with a 1-yard touchdown with 2:06 left. The game's biggest play was Martin's 5-yard touchdown pass to Morales on fourth-and-goal for a 12-6 lead.
Mason Martin delivered the game's second-biggest play with a key 23-yard pass for a first down to Carson Mason that led to a 2-score lead. Martin converted a key run for a first down to the 9-yard line.
Morales scored twice on shotgun snaps with Pfannenstiel working as his lead blocker.
"Our offensive line did great up front. I give all the credit to them," Martin said. "If my guys are open, I'm going to be able to get the football to them. Brody (Pfannenstiel) is a beast. He has a shot at anything I throw."
It marked one of Zach Baird's greatest non-league, non-district football wins.
"There's certain games that draw attention. This group needed to win a 'big game' like this," Baird said. "Cheney is a quality opponent, an excellent football team."
"It's a total team effort. I was proud of the heart we played with," Baird said. "Cheney is sound defensively. We busted a couple big ones. We made big plays through the air. For Martin's first big-time road game, he was poised. You could tell he studied the game plan and made big throws for us."
Hoisington's aggressive defensive trio of Pfannenstiel, Layton Hoffman and Colin Mater helped sack Cheney quarterback Reese Tolar five times. Morales, Pfannenstiel, Kaidenn Chambers, Drew Hekele contributed tackles for losses.
"Brody Pfannenstiel made huge plays, and still has a ton of room before he reaches his ceiling," Baird said. "Coach Matt Koelsch did a great job getting our guys ready to play defensively. The kids executed the game plan.
