Is there's one thing the KSHSAA various rule-makers are guaranteed, it's that they're going to be vaguely inconsistent.
So many examples, so little time.
Volleyball postseason. The more the merrier. Girls love volleyball.
REGIONALS 1A-3A—Pool play, one loss will not end a team's season.
SUBSTATE—Arguably, the season's most important postseason stage—one and done.
STATE—Pool play, one loss will not end a team's season.
This makes no sense.
Why would KSHSAA approve pool play for regionals and state, but one loss for substate?
The players, coaches, officials and fans all love pool play.
I know there's no logical answer, so I won't speculate.
Don't worry, it's not the first time KSHSAA volleyball rules make no sense.
One of the first state volleyball tiebreakers was least points permitted during three state matches.
Not sets won and lost. Not point differential.
Feel free to ask former Hoisington/Hutchinson High volleyball coach Tina Johnson about that tiebreaker.
SHIFTING THE GOAL-POST
Nothing like using multiple ways to run a football playoff system.
6A, 5A teams were the first classes to reward home-field advantage to the teams with the best records.
It was an excellent idea.
However, the smaller classes had to endure the idiocy of rewarding teams with worse records a home-field game for years based on either fewer home games or a zany East/West formula.
Even sillier was rewarding teams from the same football District (Norton/Hoisington, 2019) in a rematch when the losing team was granted a home game.
Hoisington beat Norton 38-7 in the first meeting, but Norton was granted a home game in a 10-8 rematch victory on an icy/snow-covered field.
It cost Hoisington a shot at the 2019 state football title against Nemaha Valley.
The "Hoisington rule" was passed the next year to reward the team that won the District the home site.
POSTSEASON (more than 16 teams)
6A, 5A, 4A basketball; 6A, 5A soccer
Once upon a time, Great Bend's 17th-seeded boys soccer team won a play-in game. The Panthers won first and second round matches, and nearly upset Maize South to qualify for the 5A state soccer semifinals.
Once upon a time, Great Bend's boys basketball team (0-20), pulled two upsets to qualify for the 5A state basketball championship and pushed McPherson at the state tournament.
Dreams die on the KSHSAA cutting board because basketball and soccer eliminate the 17th and 18th seeds.
This makes no sense.
I know there's no logical answer.
Going on.
SAY GOOD-BYE
Without a doubt, the silliest policy KSHSAA uses is granting wins for byes in 1A postseason basketball.
(NEWS FLASH—Kansas, Kansas State football teams approve this rule)
Granting byes to 1A teams guarantees inaccurate records.
The KSHSAA record-book for 1A teams for championship teams like Little River is flawed because the Redskins never enjoyed a 28-0 record. The Redskins won 27 games on the court.
The KSHSAA (OFFICIAL) record books inaccurately list Little River's record as 28-0.
That never happened.
