Great Bend's baseball team required a year for payback against the Manhattan Indians.
The Indians spoiled the Panthers chance for a 5A home-field postseason regional last year.
This time, the Panthers took no chances with a dominating 12-3 and 16-7 doubleheader sweep against the Indians that clinched a home postseason 5A regional. Manhattan (16-6) is tied with Campus for No. 2 West 6A seed.
Great Bend (19-5) is projected to be the No. 2 West seed behind Wichita Carroll (20-5), which plays Maize Thursday.
PANTHERS 12, INDIANS 3 —.Manhattan scored a trio of earned runs off Panther Carson Umphres (6-2, 1.46 ERA), but a 10-run Panther fifth inning paved the way for a 9-run victory. Umphres has 60 strikeouts in 52 2/3 innings.
Trenton Kern (.293) drove home five runs with two doubles and two singles. Ian Premer (.400) scored three runs and drove in three runs with a trio of hits.
Premer scored on Kern's double after Umphres scored on his triple.
Panther rightfielder Jace Schartz saved a run when his relay helped throw out Mikai Michaelis at home on Lucas Aslin's third-inning double. Aslin scored on Asher Newton's double. Sawyer Newton scored on Sam Spiegel's single. Aslin scored on a Rylan Vikander double for a 3-2 Manhattan lead.
Eleven Panthers reached base in a 10-run fifth inning.
Kern delivered a 2-run single and an RBI double. Premer drilled a pair of RBI singles. Herrman added an RBI single. Mohr's bunt scored Eli Soupiset. Daxton Minton (.406) hit a sacrifice fly. Kern scored on a passed ball.
PANTHERS 16, INDIANS 7 —.Umphres (.417) delivered the heavy metal with five RBI, three runs scored and three hits. Jaxon Wondra drove home a trio of runs. Minton and Herrman also drove home runs.
Manhattan scored five earned runs. Maddox Hodges drove in three runs. Asher Newton, Sawyer Newton and Rylan Vikander drove home runs.
Daxton Minton (6-1, 2.65 ERA) yielded zero earned runs in 2 2/3 innings.
