LIBERAL -- Great Bend pitchers Braelyn Turner and Chayla Prendergast combined for a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts to power an 11-0 Western Athletic Conference softball victory over Liberal.
Turner (5-0, 2.24 ERA) struck out six batters in three perfect innings. Prendergast (4-0, 1.34 ERA) struck out four batters.
Great Bend (9-0, 4-0 WAC) delivered two RBIs thanks to six Liberal errors that led to six unearned runs. The Panthers travel to Liberal Thursday.
"Braelyn had three innings of three-up, three-down," said Great Bend coach Shawn Behr. "Chayla pounded the zone, seeing seven batters in two innings. Both pitchers proved dominant."
Turner threw 37 pitches and Prendergast 28.
"They kept our pitch count low, so when we travel to Liberal Thursday, Liberal hasn’t seen our pitchers for two-to-three at bats," Behr said.
Ten strikeouts allowed the Panther defense to field five balls hit into play with no errors.
"In nine games, we have zero defensive errors," Behr said. "Our defense is definitely a huge strength. It's a confidence builder for our pitchers to stay aggressive by challenging batters."
Behr (.690) tripled home Katherine Mazouch (.479) and Alyssa McCauley (.467) doubled home Behr in the first inning for the Panthers' lone runs batted in.
"Our bats have been incredible all season, and they stayed hot tonight," Behr said. "Our top seven batters are batting over .400, and doing the 'little things' when asked."
Nine Panther runs were scored off errors, passed balls or wild pitches.
McCauley and Denver Ringo (.478) scored on errors and Mikayla Minton scored on a passed balls in a 5-run first inning.
In the second, Baze Hogan scored on a wild pitch, Mazouch on a passed ball and Behr on an error.
In the third, Camdyn Post, Ringo and Mazouch scored on Liberal's errors for an 11-0 lead.
"It's truly a dream group to coach because every single role is vital," Behr said. "We have 14 girls that you can plug and play in various roles, and close the circle both offensively and defensively."
