Great Bend completed a 3-game sweep of Dodge City 12-0 and 10-0 with a near perfect display of offense, defense and pitching at the Great Bend Sports Complex.
Carson Umphres and Owen Kaiser completed back-to-back shutouts for the No. 7 ranked 5A Panthers (16-4, 8-2 WAC). Great Bend is tied with Wichita Carroll (16-4) for the No. 1 West 5A baseball seed. The Panthers have pitched six shutouts while dominating Dodge City (7-13, 2-7 WAC) 37-0 in three wins.
PANTHERS 12, DODGE CITY 0 (G1) — Umphres threw a 2-hit shutout with seven strikeouts in an efficient 67-pitch outing. Umphres (5-1, 0.88 ERA) has 49 strikeouts in 401/3 innings.
Slade Mohr drove in three runs. Jaxon Wondra and Hunter Herrman each delivered two RBI.
Trenton Kern singled in Ian Premer on a first-inning single. Jace Schartz scored on Herrman's sacrifice bunt in a 3-run second frame. Umphres scored on a pass ball after singling in Wondra.
Kern and Koehn Ribordy scored on Wondra's double in a 3-run third. Wondra scored on a groundout for 7-0 lead.
Premer scored on an error after he doubled in Daxton Minton in a 5-run fourth. Ribordy scored on Herrman's single. Schartz and Herrman scored on Mohr's single for a 12-0 lead.
PANTHERS 10, DODGE CITY 0 (G2) — Great Bend's Kaiser (2-0, 2.52 ERA) cruised through six innings with six strikeouts.
Premer scored on a passed ball after Minton drove home Umphres after a first-inning triple. Minton singled in Umphres after his second triple. Kern scored on a wild pitch and Ribordy scored on a steal and Herrmn scored on an error for a 6-0 lead.
Umphres scored on Minton's third RBI on a sacrifice fly. Kaiser singled in Ribordy to start 3-run fourth inning. Kaiser scored on Mohr's single. Herrman scored on game-ending Umphres single for a 10-0 victory.
