HAYSVILLE —In the high-stakes world of high school swimming, team success is dictated by depth, with large programs stacking points through sheer volume of entries.
"However, Great Bend's girls swimmers proved that quality can triumph over quantity," said Panther swim coach Lauren Jordan. "Eight Panther swimmers scored 271 points competing against squads with at least 17 swimmers."
The Panthers "Efficiency Factor" was highlighted by a gold-medal finish in the 200-yard medley relay (2:16.07) by Sydney Piland, Hadley Gregg, Emma Snapp and Meredith Mazouch.
If "diving points" are extracted, the Panthers would've finished second (271 points) behind Campus (357), but ahead of Goddard Eisenhower (265) and Derby (251).
"The Panthers outperformed rosters double or triple their numbers, the 'Elite Eight' proved they are one of the most formidable forces in the water this season," Jordan said.
Panther highlights:
Mazouch captured first in the 100 freestyle (1:02.19) and sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:15.72).
Gregg displayed versatility and endurance with fourth in the 200 IM (2:59.15) and fifth in the 500 freestyle (7:23.96).
Braylee Carper secured fourth in the grueling 500 freestyle (7:16.52).
