SCOTT CITY 51, HOISINGTON 35 — Scott City proved the theory it's not how you start, it's how you finish. Scott City avenged an opening season loss to Hoisington with a dominating 51-35 victory in Tuesday's 3A Larned basketball substate.
Scott City turned the trick with a 7-0 spurt to end the first quarter and a 12-2 scoring run to end the half. The Cardinals were never able to overcome the 19-2 scoring deficit. The Beavers scored 11 points off the Cardinals' first five turnovers.
Scott City played disciplined, but rugged defense without fouling to keep the Cardinals' offense out of rhythm.
Mason Martin led the Cardinals with 13 points with 4 of 16 shooting against a constant wave of Scott City defenders. Martin scored 26 points when the Cardinals (14-11) defeated the Beavers 62-55 in the season opener. The Cardinals converted 12 of 37 shots (33%).
"We won 14 games and fought to play two playoff games at home. It's the first time we ended our season on our home floor," said Hoisington coach Kyle Haxton. "They're disappointed. The lessons they've learned they'll remember forever. We try and develop fine young men."
Scott City's Junior Meza was a matchup problem with 20 points and Avery Radke added 14 points. They combined for six 3-pointers. Scott City outscored the Cardinals 18-9 on 3-pointers. Scott City (13-9) plays No. 1 seed Beloit (18-4) Friday at Larned.
