Stafford County awards contract for new bridge

ST. JOHN — These are the minutes of the latest Stafford County Commission meeting.

The Stafford County Board of County Commissioners met on Wednesday, Oct. 8, in the Commission Room in the Annex. Chairman Stanford called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. Present: Jim Stanford, Bryce Gar,er, and Todd Wycoff.

Trent Harman. Road Department Supervisor, presented an engineering agreement with Kirkham Michael for the new bridge that will be put in 6 miles south and 0.4 miles west of Stafford on SE 60th St. Commissioner Garner moved, and Commissioner Wycoff seconded, to approve the Kirkham Michael Engineering Agreement for Bridge No. 000930681605940 in the amount of $62,000. Motion carried 3-0. Commissioner Garner moved, and Commissioner Wycoff seconded, to approve moving Trent Harman to an exempt salaried position at an annual salary of $57,000. Motion carried 3-0. Trent also presented a position change and pay increase request for Jody Brister promoting him to Road Foreman at a rate of $25 per hour. Motion carried 3-0.

LuAnn Brister. Register of Deeds, along with Marilyn Grizzell and Rebecca Austin joined the meeting to discuss a possible boundary change to a property. The property is made up of two parcels that need to be combined into one. One parcel lies within the city limits of Stafford and the other lies within the county. Both parcels need to be within the same boundaries to be combined. They will be attending the next city council meeting to discuss this issue.

Vanessa Cornwell - Treasurer, Karen Petty - Deputy Treasurer, and Triston Long joined the meeting. Vanessa advised that Triston is training to take over as the Deputy Treasurer effective at Karen’s retirement at end of the year.

Shannon Snyder, Heatlh Department Administrator, met with the commissioners to advise them of the impact on the WIC program due to the government shutdown. She explained that the USDA has given guidance concerning the use of funding to continue providing food assistance. However, WIC operations will only be able to continue until current funds are depleted. At this point. the Stafford County Health Department will exhaust its WIC Grant Funding as of this week and will have to suspend WIC appointments until such time as additional funding is received from the USDA.

Rob Murrow, Sheriff, met with the commissioners to advise that he has made a hire to fill the Sergeant/Detective position in his department.

Commissioner Garner moved and Commissioner Wycoff seconded, to approve the minutes of the October 1st meeting. Motion carried 3-0.

Commissioner Wycoff moved, and Commissioner Garner seconded, to do a letter or support for Sunflower Diversified Services’ grant proposal to KDOT for continued funding to operate the transportation services they provide. Motion carried 3-0. A letter will be drafted for the commissioners’ signatures.
