HOISINGTON — Harlen Schriever was born April 8, 1948, in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Harm and Maggie (Williams) Schriever from Lennox, S.D. He was baptized as a member of the Second Reformed Church. Harlen attended Chancellor High School and worked on the family farm and assisted his sisters and their families in farm work for many years.

He then lived in Doon, Iowa for 10-15 years working for Hymans Construction in Sioux Center, Iowa, running rock crusher and drag line in the gravel pits in the area. From 1990-1993 he was employed by Floyd Jansma, working with cattle in the feedlot and farmed north of Hull, Iowa.

In 1993, he moved to Geneseo, Kan., where he worked with the city placing water pipe and doing other odd jobs. In 2000, he moved to Hoisington and worked for Calp’s Root and Fur for 14 years before then retiring due to failing health. He continued to live in Hoisington, Kan. and had made many friends, who they all knew him as ‘Odie’. Harlen’s family is very blessed to have the wonderful community of Hoisington assist him with his daily activities and keep him entertained. He passed away at Hays Medical Center on Sept. 12, 2026.

Through the years he enjoyed conversations and participating in all types of hunting, fishing, and agriculture. He also had a knack for joking around and made it interesting to keep up with his shenanigans.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; an infant sister; and brothers-in-law, Elmer Larson, Elroy VanEngen, and Oliver Narum. Survivors include, sisters, LeeAnne Narum of Canton and Laura VanEngen of Doon, Iowa; nieces, Zona (Tracy) Hornstra of Sioux Falls, S.D., Lisa (Terry) VandenTop of Hull, Iowa, Kim VanEngen of Harrisburg, S.D., Jana VanEngen of Doon, Iowa, Chris (Meggan) Narum of Rochester, Minn., Jared (Lindsey) Narum of Canton, S.D.; as well as grand-nieces and nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and special friends.
