HUTCHINSON — The Barton Community College women's basketball team rolled to a pair of wins over Tabor College's junior varsity 68-41 and 91-72 over Bethany College's junior varsity in the BSN Tip-Off Classic.
COUGARS 68, TABOR JV 41 — The Cougars (2-2) were led by Vivian Onugha with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Onugha had her three-game double-double streak come to an end. Alaina Eck and Brittany Simpson scored eight points apiece.
The Cougars scored ten unanswered points in the opening four minutes before capping first half action with another eight straight for a 39-23 locker room advantage. Tacking on another five to its lead in the third frame, the Cougars would eventually balloon the margin to as many as thirty points in cruising to its second straight victory.
Now 2-2 on the early season, the Cougars will have a break from competition in preparation of hosting the upcoming weekend's Best Western/Booster Club Classic. Barton will play both the 5:30 p.m.contests, Friday taking on Redlands Community College followed by Saturday's game against Kansas Wesleyan University junior varsity. Following the conclusion of each, the Cougar men take the floor in the 7:30 p.m. tips beginning Fridayagainst Northern Oklahoma College-Enid with Harry S. Truman College the opponent on Saturday.
In the earlier contests, Hutchinson Community College fills both the women's and men's side as the defending national champion and top ranked women's team plays the 1:00 p.m. games with the 15th ranked Blue Dragon men competing in the 3:00 p.m. tip-offs.
Having just one Cougar in double figures, ten players put points on the board as Alaina Eck's 9 points led the way with Brittany Simpson and Macie Smith each scoring 8 points.
Kodi Greer led the distribution with 4 assists in fifteen minutes on the court, also hauling down 7 rebounds helping the Cougars to a plus-22 rebound advantage.
Kya Thornton's 14 points on 50% shooting including 4-of-6 from long range led Tabor as Ellie McKellips and Malynn Reil each accounted for 7 points.
COUGARS 91, BETHANY JV 72 — The Cougars were led by Onugha with 25 points, 19 rebounds and 3 assists.
Close behind was Macie Smith's career high performance of 24 points and 7 rebounds with 4 steals. Eck added 15 points, 8 rebounds, and a game high 6 steals as Regina Donanu just missed a double-double in scoring 12 points and 9 rebounds.
The Cougars shot 45% with 21 assists on their 39 field goals. Brittany Simpson dished out a career high 9 assists and added 7 points.
Hannah Moss led Bethany with 17 points and a team lead tying 6 rebounds, J'Myra London also grabbed 6 rebounds with 11 points, and Amando Tower added 9 points.
A Bethany trey at the buzzer gave the Swedes a first quarter lead before canning their fifth triple of the opening twenty within a 6-0 spurt to lead by three at the halftime break.
The Swedes put Barton in a 6-point early third quarter hole, but the Cougars responded outscoring them by eight points the rest of the frame.
Gaining all the momentum and finding their stride, Barton went on to score 31 of their 54 second half points in the final frame, building out a 22 point margin in coasting to the win.
