Hutchinson downs Cougar women, 49-38

HUTCHINSON -- The Barton Community College women's basketball team saw a strong defensive first half give way to a struggle after halftime.

No. 20 Hutchinson Community College pulled away for a 49-38 Jayhawk Conference basketball win Wednesday. Hutchinson (18-5, 13-4 Jayhawk) drops the Cougars to 9-14, 7-10 Jayhawk. The Cougars travel to Pratt Saturday.

Barton's Regina Donanu scored 14 points, while Mary Akinde followed with 13 points and 16 rebounds, including five offensively for her eighth double-double of the season. The duo combined for 19 of Barton's 23 second-half points.

Hutchinson's Kamyra Barber's earned a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Blue Dragons held a 12-0 advantage in bench scoring.

The Cougars  shot 30% after opening at 23% in the first half, 1-of-10 from outside. Barton committed 22 turnovers, leading to a plus-seven Hutchinson advantage in points off turnovers. The Blue Dragons shot 35% and knocked down five 3-pointers.

Barton led 5-2 despite shooting 2-of-16. A Sadie Spray 3-pointer and a Donanu bucket accounted for the scoring midway through the period. The Cougars limited the Blue Dragons to two points on 1-of-15 shooting.

Barton led 9-2 on baskets from Mary Akinde and Donanu. Hutchinson ended a near 10-minute scoring with an 11-2 run to lead 13-11. Donanu and Christal Long scored, and a Blue Dragon bucket tied the score at 15-15.

Hutchinson converted four second-half 3-pointers while converting 13 Cougar miscues into 14 points. Donanu scored eight of her 14 points in the third period and Alaina Eck's 3-point play gave the Cougars a 24-23 lead.

Barton trimmed the deficit to four, but the Cougars were held to 12 points in the period, 11 by Akinde.
