HOISINGTON — Two well-kept secret weapons of Hoisington football coach Zach Baird have been officially been unveiled.
Freshman quarterback sensation Colton Staudinger delivered a coming-out party with a sensational 4-touchdown debut to spark a 52-12 victory over Lyons that clinches the 3A District 6 football championship.
Baird's second 'secret weapon' is former quarterback Kolter Hahn, who dazzled the Lions with his breakaway speed. Hahn caught 27, 58 and 61-yard touchdown strikes from Staudinger. Hahn's initial 27-yard score on a shovel pass came after the Cardinals blocked a Lyons punt.
Baird unveiled perhaps his first 'trick play' of his coaching career.
Staudinger dropped a shotgun snap, was bumped by Isaac Johansen, but tossed a short pass to Leighton Eubanks, who flipped the football to a runaway locomotive tackle Brody Corbett who rumbled 45 yards for a touchdown and a 30-6 lead.
Logan Cossel caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Hahn, who returned at quarterback for a 38-6 lead.
Baird made sure he made homage to his run-oriented reputation with a 11-yard touchdown run by Preston Merlau and a 24-yard touchdown by Benjamin Heck.
Hoisington (4-2, 3-0 District) owns wins over Lyons (4-2, 1-1 District) and Pratt and has clinched the 3A District title.
