Panthers outlast Buffaloes 4-1

GARDEN CITY – Garden City coach Trina Mai wisely pitched around Great Bend standout Kya Behr with the go-ahead runner at third base in a 1-1 tie.

Garden City’s Kyleigh Whitehurst was forced to pitch to Behr, who led off the eighth inning with a double. Back-up Adelle Smith, playing for leading hitter DeShawnna Bryant, drew a crucial walk on a 3-2 pitch.

When Kamryn Koelsch laid down a perfect bunt, the Buffaloes threw the ball away and Behr and Smith raced around the bases for a 3-1 lead. Alyssa McCauley followed with a perfect bunt that scored Koelsch from third base.

Almanza and Whitehurst reached base to start the eighth inning, but freshman reliever Chayla Prendergast (8-2, 4.14 ERA) retired Elly Ortiz and struck out Aleeya Cruz on a called strike and struck out Isabella Wilder to end the ballgame.

Buffalo Elly Ortiz singled home Yasmin Angeles in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Catcher Kamryn Koelsch threw out Ortiz to end the inning.

Panther centerfielder Camdyn Post delivered the game’s biggest defensive play by throwing out Cruz at third base in the fourth inning.

Behr singled home Paige Thexton for a 1-1 tie in the third inning.

Whitehurst worked around Katherine Mazouch’s leadoff fifth-inning triple by striking out Thexton, Camdyn Post and Koelsch.

Great Bend (15-5, 8-2 WAC) lost all six games to Hays and Garden City in 2023, but have beaten the Indians and Buffaloes in 2024. If the Panthers win their final four games, they’ll clinch a 5A postseason home site.

After getting embarrassed 16-1 and 21-2 by defending WAC champion Hays Monday, the Buffaloes (5-9, 2-4 WAC) played their best softball Tuesday.

The Panthers’ primary edge is a trio of reliable pitchers – Prendergast, Braelyn Turner (5-3, 3.50 ERA) and Alyssa McCauley (1-0, 3-22 ERA). Turner pitched five innings and Prendergast threw three scoreless innings with six strikeouts.

Whitehurst (5-9) has pitched every inning for the Buffaloes.

After 20 games, Behr is batting .540 (40 for 74); Bryant .515 (34 for 66); Thexton .438 (28 for 64) and Camdyn Post .415 (27 for 65).
