Panther girls win WAC bowling title

GARDEN CITY — Great Bend's Zoey Mayberry earned Western Athletic first-team honors to lead the Panthers to the WAC bowling title with a 13-0 victory over Garden City. The Panthers beat Garden City 95-80 for the WAC championship

Mayberry earned medalist honors 630, (149-224-257) against Garden City with Emery Meza finishing third, 453 (143-137-173). Zoey Mayberry and Brooklynn Mayberry earned first-team WAC honors. Meza and Abigail Alvarez earned second-team All-WAC honors.

"Zoey struck out in the first and second Baker games to clinch it," said Great Bend coach David Feldbauer. "Zoey rallied with two big 200-plus games after she struggled in her first game. Our other girls have stepped up all year.. It's always nice to win the WAC."

Garden City's boys defended their Western Athletic title by beating Great Bend 12-1. Garden City's K.J. Burns, 781 (266-259-256) and runner-up Athen Villareal, 725 (254-237-234) led the Buffaloes to the top six scores. Great Bend's Deagan Miller placed seventh, 580 (191-154-224). The Panthers won a Baker game 162-147 and lost 216-212 in another Baker game.

Great Bend's boys finished third in the WAC, two points behind Dodge city. Xander Orth earned first-team All-WAC honors. Daegan Miller, Kanyen Parr and Quinten Miller earned secon-team All-WAC honors.

Great Bend plays at Thursday's 5A Hutchinson bowling regional with three girls and boys teams qualifying for 5A state.

"The girls regional is the toughest in the state with five of the top 10 teams," Feldbauer said. "It'll be a battle.:

Great Bend's girls completed a 13-0 sweep of Hays High. Zoey Mayberry placed first 579 (172-182-225) and Meza placed third, 439 (156-148-135).

The Panther boys downed Hays High 9-4. Quinten Miller earned medalist honors, 670 (269-188-213) followed by Daegan Miller, 616 (206-184-226); and third-place Xander Orth, 604 (170-245-189).
