Wheatland Electric Cooperative, Inc. (WEC) is pleased to announce that the Great Bend High School Student Ambassador Program has been awarded a $4,500 grant from the WEC Sharing Success Fund to support the development of a student-designed outdoor gathering space at the high school.

The Student Ambassador Program is a student leadership organization made up of students in grades 10–12 who serve and support the entire high school community. Focused on fostering connection and belonging, student ambassadors welcome new students, support school events, and lead initiatives that promote student mental health and well-being.

Through conversations with their peers, ambassadors identified a need for more opportunities and spaces to connect during the school day, leading to the development of plans for an outdoor eating and gathering space where students can relax, recharge, and build meaningful relationships. Once completed, this space will provide a safe environment that supports social connection and mental wellness while enhancing the high school as a central hub for community events and activities, benefiting not only students but also families and community members who utilize the school for gatherings and programs.

The Sharing Success grant will play a key role in advancing this student-led project by funding the purchase of four outdoor recycled tables, helping transform the vision into a functional and welcoming space. In addition to support from Wheatland, student ambassadors have engaged local civic organizations and businesses to build partnerships that are helping bring this project to life while strengthening connections across the community. For more information on how you can help support this project, contact Kathy Davis, Student Ambassador Program sponsor at Great Bend High School.
