GARDEN CITY GIRLS 57, GREAT BEND 26 — Garden City's sharpshooter Mia Hannagan made the Panthers pay for the lack of challenging a hot shooter with seven consecutive 3-pointers in a stunning 21-point third period. Time-after-time, Hannagan kept firing as the Panthers didn't deny her the basketball outside the 3-point line.
Hannagan's 27-point effort outscored the Panthers in a dominating 57-26 Western Athletic Conference basketball victory.
"Once she got her feet set, you could see the confidence coming from her," said Great Bend coach Jade Winter.
Hannagan converted 9 of 15 shots from 3-point range. Her Garden City teammates made 1 of 14 3-pointers.
The Panthers (3-5, 0-2) trailed 18-15 right before halftime when the Buffaloes closed with a 6-1 burst for a 24-16 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Hannagan personally put the game away with a sparkling display of perimeter shooting. With each successful shot, Hannagan's confidence and shooting distance expanded. Hannagan's only miss was a last-second attempt that ended the third quarter.
Great Bend's fearless 5-foot-3 Meredith Mazouch continued her sparkling play with a 9-point game and several assists. After trailing 11-4, the Panthers outscored the Buffaloes 11-7 before the Buffaloes dominated. Cassie Ellegood and DeShawnna Bryant each added five points. The Panthers shot 17% on 8 of 47 shooting.
"We need to find that next gear and keep going," Winter said. "We attacked the glass and started going to the free throw line in the second quarter."
The Panthers (3-5, 0-2 WAC) travel to Hutchinson High Jan. 17.
The Buffaloes (6-2, 1-0 WAC) relied on K.J. Pinchon, who dominated inside for 17 points.
