Soybean growers invited to apply for board seat

The United Soybean Board, which oversees the funds of the national checkoff, is seeking farmer-leaders to serve on the national board. Kansas has one director position to nominate following the December first-term completion for Charles Atkinson, Great Bend.

The mission of the soybean checkoff is to create value for U.S. soybean farmers by investing in research, education and promotion of U.S. soy. Farmer-leaders bring their perspectives to the board and direct those investments, and the checkoff’s current return-on-investment of $12.30 back to farmers for each dollar invested demonstrates the effectiveness of their work.

Kurt Maurath, Oakley, sought a USB director position in 2021 because he wanted to make sure that checkoff dollars were being spent well. Recently retired from the board, he confidently says that they are, citing production research and the development of new uses for soybeans, such as firefighting foam and soy-based asphalt and tires.

USDA, which handles the appointment process, defines eligible nominees as “soybean producers within the U.S. who own or share ownership and risk of loss of soybean production.” Requirements of service include attending the February, July and December meetings annually as well as various conference calls and other events. Leaders volunteer their time to serve but are reimbursed for travel and other expenses related to attending meetings and events on behalf of USB.

Each Qualified State Soybean Board submits two nominees per open position to the USDA for consideration, from which the secretary of agriculture will make an appointment.

KSC works to ensure that its nominees to USB reflect the diversity in operation size, experience, production practices and marketing strategies that represent Kansas soybean farmers.

Interested individuals in Kansas are asked to apply by close of business Monday, May 18, 2026. The interest form is available at www.kansassoybeans.org/forms.
