It’s all quiet on the library’s Western Front this week. As we don’t have any real activities to speak of, I figured I could use this space to remind you that we still have lots to do here even without dazzling magicians, movies, escape puzzles, and craft nights. In addition to being a great place to hang out and read a book, study, or find something to take home to read or watch, we also have free public computers with scanners anyone can use. We also offer low-cost printing and copying.
In addition to books, you can also read local papers and a wide range of magazines in some of our comfy new couches. And I haven’t even gotten to the children’s section yet, where they have their own computers, some for more open-ended use and some special touch screen computers for educational play.
We have tons of toys, games, puzzles, crafts, and activities to do in the children’s area available all year round. And, of course, we can’t forget about the teens, who have their own space to hang out, read, craft, and play one of our many video game consoles. Come check us out!
That being said, we do love offering programs, so we’ll have some things for you to do next week. Starting Monday, Aug. 17, we have Adult Bingo at 10 a.m. Play a few rounds and win some fabulous prizes.
Tuesday, we have Open Book Club at 7 p.m. after Tech Tuesday at 11 a.m. This month we will be discussing “Miss Benson’s Beetle” by Rachel Joyce. “Leaving London behind, Margery Benson, a schoolmarm and spinster in 1950, embarks on a quest to the other side of the world in search of her childhood obsession – the golden beetle of New Caledonia – with the help of a fun-loving assistant who changes her life forever.”

Then Thursday, after Genealogy Thursday at 11 a.m., we have Teen Manga & Anime Club at 5:30 p.m. I am personally quite excited for this particular meeting, because we will be watching one of my favorite movies, the Studio Ghibli classic “Porco Rosso.” Follow the story of Porco Rosso, a former World War I flying ace who has somehow turned into a pig during the war. As he prepares to battle the pirate crew’s American ace, Porco Rosso enlists the help of spunky girl mechanic Fio Piccolo to build him the fastest plane on the Adriatic. But to do so, Porco must travel to Italy, where he is wanted for treason after refusing to fly for Italy during the war. Afterwards, we’ll discuss the movie and put our paper folding skills to the test by seeing who can make the best origami plane!
